The Schizophrenia Society of Canada (SSC) has begun a survey project intended to develop a tool for measuring Quality of Life as defined by people living with mental illness and their families. When the SSC initially looked at the research on QOL it was clear that the existing tools focus more on elements such as symptomatology, hospitalization, episodes of crisis, employment status and fail to include many measures which consumers report as meaningful to them. They are further broadened the literature review to look at the recovery literature and conducted interviews with the provincial Schizophrenia Societies, consumers and family members and are also meeting with selective groups of consumers and families across the country to get a more nuanced understanding of what QOL means to them. The information gathered through survey and focus groups will be used to inform the policy, education, programming and advocacy efforts of the SSC. Please take a moment to fill in the survey, circulate it to others and post it on your organization's website.
