St. Catharines (February 27, 2008 ) Canada's only national non-diagnostic specific mental health consumer/driven organization which is national in scope and service from coast to coast to coast in Canada applauds the Federal Government for their support to the Mental Health Commission of Canada to serve those living at the margins of society.
In the Federal Budget 2008 appropriately themed "Advantage Canada", those living with mental illness, addictions and homelessness issues will be supported through a number of demonstration projects spearheaded by the Mental Health Commission of Canada.
"The moneys tied to this announcement will go a long way to helping those living with mental illnesses, addiction and homelessness in Canada. We applaud the Federal Government of Canada for taking the leadership on these issues and support the Mental Health Commission of Canada in their management of initiatives to support the issues of the most marginalized of people living in Canada." Roy Muise, President of the National Network for Mental Health said.
"Furthermore, the National Network for Mental Health supports the Mental Health Commission of Canada as it creates initiatives to address our community and its needs, and we welcome any opportunity to work with the Commission on these projects as they evolve." Muise added.
"This is about US" he explained. "We are the consumers of the system, the ones living with mental illness, the ones who live on the margins of society. Recognition of the problem was the first step, having Champions of the cause in Senator Michael Kirby and Minister Tony Clement was the second, money to save lives and support our peers is the beginning of a long road to healing our country. Let us not forget that you can only judge a country by how it treats its most vulnerable, and I believe that this is a significant indicator that Canada is on its own Road to Recovery."
