American Association of People with Disabilities
Search for

Chief Executive Officer

Washington, D.C.

The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD), the country's largest cross-disability membership organization, seeks a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead this remarkable organization into the future.

AAPD, whose mission is to organize the disability community to be a powerful force for change - politically, socially and economically, has achieved stunning success in its endeavors since its founding in 1995.  In the past fifteen years, AAPD has helped unite the diverse community of people with disabilities, including their families, friends and supporters, to be a national voice for change in implementing the goals of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  Through its mission, AAPD strives to ensure that every individual with a disability has the power to be part of a national movement for disability rights. As an "umbrella" organization, AAPD has the strength and impact to influence public policy and programs in ways that can only be achieved through powerful coalitions.

The successful candidate for this position will report to a dynamic, visionary, committed and involved Board of Directors and will lead a talented team of AAPD staff. S/he will provide the direction, vision, inspiration and leadership for the development of the organization's agenda and goals for the future and will be the key driver in ensuring that future is achieved.  The CEO will be an individual with the skills, talents and desire to drive organizational growth, through membership, corporate sponsorship, visibility, and programs and s/he will have a persona that inspires confidence, attracts supporters, motivates and develops staff, and gains and holds the attention of key constituents.

AAPD's Board would like the next phase of AAPD's evolution to be remarkable as the result of its expansion and impact outside of Washington D.C. and the Capital Beltway.  Therefore, the successful candidate must be not only a solid organizational leader, but also a creative and visionary leader with new ideas for reaching and impacting the large and diverse disability community in the United States.

Few leadership opportunities in the not-for-profit sector can match the challenge, excitement and potential impact of AAPD's CEO position.  We are seeking the most talented, visionary and committed individuals as candidates for this position...A minimum of a Bachelor's degree is required with an advanced degree strongly preferred.

AAPD has retained the New York-based search firm Amrop Battalia Winston to assist with this important recruitment.  All applications and inquiries should be addressed to:

Lyn Brennan, Partner, lbrennan@amropbw.com or

Sheri Madison, Associate, sheri@amropbw.com.
