On May 13, 2010 the National Program Director had the opportunity to participate in a focus group with the Law Commission of Ontario (LCO) that presented and discussed some of the barriers that individuals with disabilities face when dealing with laws in Ontario.
In preperation for this meeting he held a focus group with the assistance of PEP in North Bay. During this focus group in North Bay we discussed the laws in Ontario and its impact on individuals with lived experience. One theme became prevelant right away, Ontario Disability Support Program and its services. Many frustrations were shared and much information was gathered. We would like to thank everyone that attended!
With this information in hand he was able to offer recomendations and provide feedback to the LCO. It is with this feedback and others like it that the LCO will create a principle-based tool to help legislators and policy-makers consider the interests, legal rights and needs of persons with disabilities in the design of laws and policies. This tool aims to help legislators and policy-makers simplify the law and increase access to justice for persons with disabilities.
The Law Commission of Ontario (LCO) is independent of government and recommends law reform to the provincial government in relation to law and policy. The LCO’s recommendations aim to increase access to justice and to make the provincial law more relevant to the lives of people in Ontario. The Disability and the Law project is one of several on-going LCO projects.
